Short drive north to New york, short drive south to DC with Baltimore on the way. Pros is that it’s cheap but cons are that a lot of the city is block to block and it can shift over time. Philly is one of the most diverse cities in the country, but racism still exists. Philly really was a major world center for culture, arts, politics, and education for a couple of centuries. That is hard baked into this place. Taxes are rising every year and we get less and less for those tax dollars. But don’t fool yourself, losing 1/2 a million people (aka the city of Kansas City or Atlanta) does real damage. Fairmount and around the museums is a nice neighborhood but you're more cut off from Center City, and events on the parkway can be a HUGE pain in the ass when they close a bunch of streets off. Not surprisingly the city websites are nearly useless. So it looks like the issue is that I work outside of Philly and I'm supposed to pay anyway, but there are a bunch of hoops to jump through to do that. University City is not that dangerous and Philadelphia as a whole isn't that much more dangerous than most big US cities. Philly is a decent choice for city life cheaper but it comes with the cons of that and as a city you can’t compare it to nyc.
